After Thirty Years, Fiat Brings Back the 124 Spider Roadster

At the 2015 Los Angeles Motor Show, Fiat revealed the reintroduction of the 124 Spider into its line up. The first 124 will be offered as limited edition “Prima Edizone Lusso”. According to Google Translate, that means “First Edition Luxury”, but I suppose it’s supposed to actually mean something like Primo Luxury Edition. Either way, they will be individually numbered with a commemorative badge and available in exclusive Azzuro Italia blue with premium saddle leather seats. Pictures below.

Mazda Under the Body, Fiat Under the Hood

If some of you are thinking there’s something awfully familiar about the new Fiat 124 Spider, it’s because this new Spider is being built on the new MX-5 platform. The MX-5/Miata has been the undisputed king of this segment for three decades now.  I guess Fiat just decided that if you can’t beat’em, join’em! That being said, Fiat has done a good job giving the Miata platform a distinctly 124 Spider look. Fans of the 124 will definitely recognize 124 design cues.

Under the hood, the 124 Spider is still Fiat. Powered by Fiat’s turbocharged MultiAir 1.4-liter engine, the new 124 comes with 160 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque, available with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The 124 Spider’s suspension uses a double-wishbone layout in front and a multi-link in the rear, specifically tuned for greater stability while braking and turning. Steering uses an electric power assist (dual pinion) system.
