2013 Mercedes SL
Mercedes has an all-new SL for the coming 2013 model year. Apparently taking styling cues from the SLS AMG, the 2013 SL sports a refreshing redesign that is easy on the eyes but also has the bang where it counts. Made almost entirely of aluminum, the new SL is more rigid and lighter than its predecessor. Employing an all aluminum body shell, Mercedes says the car weighs 242 lbs less than had they used the steel technology of its predecessor. Aluminum was used in most of the suspension and parts of the steering components, as well.
But the real story is always under the hood, and the all-new SL does not disappoint. Engine displacement is down, but horsepower and torque are both up. The 4663cc V8 represents a reduction of .08 liters in engine displacement, but horsepower is up 12% at 429hp and torque is up 32% from 391 lb-ft to 516 lb-ft. With those kinds of numbers, it’s no surprise that the 2013 SL zips from 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds.
If that’s not enough to blow your hair back, there’s the optional retractable hard top. It’s also fast, taking only twenty seconds to open or close the completely. It comes in two flavors, glass or the panoramic roof with “Magic Sky Control”. Mercedes describes this feature as a transparent roof that switches between light and dark at the push of a button (didn’t I see this on Knight Rider once?). The roof is virtually transparent in the light setting, providing a top down feel even with the roof up. But with the push of a button the roof becomes dark enough to keep the sun, and prying eyes, out, as well.
Other features on the all-new SL are the 7-speed transmission, integrated electric wind stop, and sun-reflecting leather.
