2016 Camaro – Light, Quick and Nimble

Light and Quick

GM has released the numbers that matter on the 2016 Camaro and they’re nothing to sneeze at. Shedding 390 lbs (177kg), the 2016 SS turns a blistering 4.0 second 0-60 time and 12.3-second quarter-mile when equipped with the all-new eight-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission. Or you can “settle” for the 275-hp 2.0L Turbo delivering 5.4-second 0-60 performance and a 14.0-second quarter-mile, with the six-speed manual or the 335-hp 3.6L V-6 and eight-speed automatic zipping to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds and down the quarter-mile in only 13.5 seconds.

And nimble…

Riding on standard 18-inch wheels and Goodyear Eagle Sport all-season tires, the 2.0L Turbo delivers 0.85 g in cornering grip and 60-0-mph braking in 129 feet. The 3.6L V-6 RS, which includes 20-inch wheels and Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric all-season run-flat tires delivers 0.89 g in cornering and 60-0 mph braking in 124 feet. The Camaro SS features Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 run-flat summer-only tires, enabling 0.97 g in cornering and 60-0 braking in 117 feet.

For those of us who remember being happy to see GM finally start boosting horsepower into the mid-200’s on the 3rd generation IROC’s towards the end of their run, the numbers above, especially out of four and six-cylinder offerings, is kind of mind-boggling. But I would still rather have a good old stick-shift between the seats.  What do you think about the new Camaros?

I'm one of those guys that "talks about cars too much", the history, design and engineering, I can go on forever. I finally decided blogging might be a better outlet for my obsession than dinner dates. I enjoy learning, sharing and, of course, driving!
