The Electric DeLorean

For those of you who aren’t aware, there’s a little company down in Texas called
The DeLorean Motor Company“. Although not associated with the original DeLorean manufacturer that went bankrupt in 1982 under some rather embarrassing circumstances for its founder and namesake, John DeLorean, the “new” DeLorean Motor Company (a.k.a. “DMC Texas”) has been supporting and continuing custom production of the iconic stainless steel beauty since 1995. DMC Texas just announced plans to start offering an electric version in 2013.

1.21 gigawatts???

Easy Doc, put away the Mr. Fusion.  The Electric DeLorean isn’t going to need quite that much power.   According to an interview with ABC News, DMC expects the Electric DeLorean to have the electric equivalent of 260hp and a top speed of 125mph.  That’s plenty of juice to reach 88.8mph, no clock towers needed.  ABC goes on to report that DMC is expecting the built-to-order cars to have a range of at least 70 miles per charge and a price of around $90,000. The batteries will be made by a California company appropriately named “Flux Power”.  Doc Brown would be so pleased.

Although most of us don’t have $90K lying around I think DMC is going to quickly have a waiting list of people wanting to go “Back to the Future” in one of these babies.  It’ the perfect evolution for the futuristic DeLorean.  And if you’re going to go electric, which is likely the wave of the future, as Doc Brown would say “why not do it with some style?”
