Chevy Malibu Turbo for 2013!

The Chevy Malibu gets a makeover for 2013 that not only involves updated lines, but an optional turbocharged 2.0 liter four-banger that boasts some pretty impressive numbers.  The new styling is a welcome improvement from the last makeover which, frankly, looked a lot like the product of a pairing between a Honda Civic and a Dodge Ram pickup after they shared a little too much ethanol at closing time.  The  new Malibu’s new styling has toned down the front grill and  adopted four candy-like rear tail lights (see below) which are much easier on the eyes.

But the real story for the new Malibu is under the hood, which is why we’re covering this grocery-getter on Speedmeister.com in the first place.  The Malibu gets a turbo option added to the 2.0 liter dual-overhead cam four-cylinder.  This little engine features an aluminum block and head, and direct fuel-injection.  But the turbo is the real story.  Employing what Chevy calls “twin-scroll” turbocharging, low-end turbo lag is virtually eliminated.  Each scroll on the turbine is fed by a separate exhaust passage, giving the engine immediate throttle response over a broad rpm range.  Total output is rated at 259 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, which is sustained between 1,700 to 5,500 rpm. That’s a lot of punch for a four-banger.

The the more elegant, yet understated look makes this latest Malibu the perfect sleeper, although the standard 18-inch aluminum wheels do hint at a little more.  Now if they would just put the drive wheels back where they belong and offer a coupe, that would be a hot ticket!
