Infiniti EMERG-E Extended Range Hybrid Electric Concept Vehicle

Infiniti debuted the fully functional version of its EMERG-E concept vehicle at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this past weekend.  Brought to life in collaboration with several UK tech companies through the UK Government’s Technology Strategy Board, the vehicle is a collaboration between Infiniti and several other UK-based specialist technology leaders.  Lotus is apparently included in that group, as the car was built on the Lotus Evora platform.   But the drivetrain is made up of twin electric motors generating 402bhp (300kW), backed up by a 1.2 liter three-cylinder gasoline-powered range-extending engine, as well as traditional hybrid regenerative breaking technology.  The EMERGE-E zips from 0-60mph in four seconds and can go 30 miles with zero emissions.  After that, the gasoline engine helps out, but emissions remain extremely low producing CO2 output of only 55g/km (NEDC) over a 300 mile range.  An emphasis on lighter weight doesn’t exactly hurt in achieving these impressive numbers.  The EMERG-E has an aluminum chassis and carbon fiber body which not only results in a 20-percent gain in strength, but a 50-percent reduction in weight.

That’s nice and all, but what I’m really paying attention to is that it’s low, sleek, and can do 0-60mph in four seconds.
